Small glimpses of whales on the way to Victoria

This last day at sea offered our best opportunity to spot whales. They’d announce visible pods over the ship’s speakers and indicate if they were port or starboard. Then I’d have to search what side of the ship that meant…

Every.

Time.

(Post trip searches revealed: Port is left — both are four letters. Starboard is the other side…)

We caught a few spouts and tails fluking (that’s what it’s called!) way off in the distance. I’ve now adjusted my bucket list to one day see whales breeching or flipper slapping. Maybe then I’ll bring a big camera with a proper zoom lens.

This last leg would have an obligatory stop in Victoria, British Columbia for a few hours. Why? Because the U.S. Passenger Vessel Services Act requires cruise ships to stop in a Canadian port on their journey between Seattle and Alaska.

We didn’t get off the ship. Instead, we had one last dinner with our friends and packed up our bags to put out in the hallway.
