Went to see the movie Here by Robert Zemeckis (the one with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright de-aged).
Hmmm. This was a tough one. No spoilers, I swear!
I figured this was going to be cloying. (It was.) But I also had assumptions that it would be a traditional movie. (It is not.) It’s actually daring, eschewing norms to present a unique concept of narrative and time.
If I wasn’t in a theater, it might be hard to stick with it… The allure of devices or the snack drawer could break the flow.
But there we were at 10:35 on a Saturday morning, and we rode it out.
I enjoyed it – even with the schmaltz, special effects, and ‘everything and the kitchen sink’ moments.
I’ve been leaving TCM on the television when doing tasks that don’t require 100% attention because the channel doesn’t constantly break into loud commercials. (Thanks for the tip Shelly!) Here would feel right at home there, eventually.
As the credits rolled, I’d no idea the movie was based on a graphic novel.
I was planning to dig into this tidbit over the weekend and had a lovely reminder with Jack Cheng’s Sunday #432. Included in the always chock-full-of-good newsletter he includes a link to this review: Chris Ware on Here by Richard McGuire – a game-changing graphic novel.
After reading that I placed an order at the local bookstore.
Knowing this pedigree, I give Zemeckis extra credit for trying something different that honored the source material.
