The Substance

My brother and I threw out the idea of catching a movie on the last Wednesday of each month. This proved to be a cumbersome time and cadence. We’ve found weekend matinees work best and it’s totally fine to skip months.

Today we had a choice of Megalopolis or The Substance. I vied heavily for the latter because there was buzz and I feared spoilers would ruin the fun.

(Note: These next few sentences very vaguely spoil the trajectory.) It started off artfully. As the story of maintaining youth unfolded, it got darker, turned horrific and then just downright gross — bonkers, actually.

I tip my hat to Demi Moore, director Coralie Fargeat, cinematographer Benjamin Kračun, whoever designed The Substance packaging and everyone else involved.

I don’t know if I could watch it all again, but it was horrifically memorable and most certainly not for everyone.
