Game night featuring Shobu, Abducktion, Lacuna and Pac-Man

Joe & Mike had us over for a game night and said they’d have snacks — and by snacks they meant a spread fit for queens and kings.

I think we may have brought over a single board game but they had a stack that looked far more interesting — plus also? They had experience playing each so we went with those!

Shobu board game with colored stones

Shobu — (2-player) Joe and Mike made their own version of this board game that uses four grids and two sets of different colored stones. Each turn has two moves: passive and aggressive. It takes a minute to get the hang of the rules but it becomes cut-throat quickly. Whoever seems to be winning swings wildly as the game progresses. Thumbs up!

duck board game

Abducktion — (2-4 players) I had minor issues with the card and individual board designs, but I have issues with 94% of game designs. The little duck game pieces made up for any aesthetic deficits and gameplay was spicy. Totes adorbs. Would play again, thumbs up!

Lacuna board game with colorful flower pieces

Lacuna — (2-player) This game is super pretty and kind of esoteric. A bunch of colored flowers (gears) are dropped randomly in a playing field. You draw imaginary lines between them to place pawns and take control of neighboring gears (flowers). A ruler is involved if folks can’t agree on proximity. Sidenote: This game has a 1 minute overview video and all games should do this.

Pac-Man board game

Pac-Man — (2-5 players) We actually didn’t play this but set up the board so I could take a photo because the game pieces are lovely. We did go over the rules and in short, one person is Pac-Man and everyone else is ghosts. I like this dynamic and think it’d be fun.

An enjoyable evening all around made even better with Mike providing a visual soundtrack with new (to us) music and videos plus an appearance by Oliver the shy cat. ♥️
