A kindred spirit

Some good things happened after a little back and forth with Austin Kleon… He mentioned our interaction on his newsletter and that in turn connected me to some wonderful folks and photographers from all over.

One was Kevin Vognar, who’s been sharing daily photos for over 15 years on his personal website. Each post contains a photograph, bit of context, song that was listened to, tags and links to a cast of characters that gathers all posts of a particular person. (Whoa! I thought this was a novel approach when I folded it in, turns out he’d been doing it for many years.)

We carved out an afternoon to connect and had an excellent conversation about it all.

One key overlap is that we both began on LiveJournal, which was a great personal blogging community back in the day. At some point they added a feature to list a song with your posts and that was something we both carried forward as we hopped to different platforms. I eventually ended up on WordPress while Kevin developed a codebase specific for his needs.

In addition to adding music he’s created a rich media log with ratings to record daily podcasts, readings, games and things he’s watched.

We talked about processes, organization, how our practices have evolved over time, and features we hope to add. Funny enough? We barely talked about cameras.

Time flew by and I hope it’s a conversation we pick up again!

Here’s the flip side from Kevin’s perspective.

  1. Oh hello there! It was a treat getting to talk about this shared experience. I’m glad we could make time for it and that Austin Kleon led me to your project. :]
