2023 has been chock full of concerts — 13 to be exact. And while I’m not going to rank them, Peter Gabriel’s i/o tour has turned out to be a favorite.
It started with the soundtrack before the band began, John Metcalf’s Root To Leaf filled Nationwide Arena in Columbus and set a tone that something lovely was about to happen.
The show opened under darkness of a new moon and campfire.
If you haven’t been following along with Peter Gabriel, he’s taken a unique approach with his new album. Singles are being released each month on the full moon. The album won’t be complete until the end of the year. The songs so far are grand.
More musicians joined and the staging would continue to evolve through the night, mixing visuals tailored to the songs.
There was a current of gratitude threaded through the whole affair that lent an elevated vibe.
My phone snapshots don’t do justice for the show, but Zan sent over a link to bass player Tony Levin’s tour diary from Columbus and it’s incredibly dense with goodness from behind the scenes.
There aren’t many dates left in the US, but if he comes near you, I’d say go for it.
