After Yang

The unrelated image above is the single snapshot from the day. It’s from a lithograph recently framed.

I’d gotten through most After Yang before, but drifted to sleep at some point. The pacing, music and aesthetic have some serene spa-like vibe—all tinged with either melancholy, contemplation or both.

At one point Colin Farrell’s character steps outside to feel the rain. There’s a table with a bowl and some objects in the foreground (to the right below). Almost imperceptible as it’s mostly in shadow, but the light that is there? Oh it’s perfect.

I kept rewinding to regard how much it looked like a painting.

Something I didn’t notice the first time around was how the aspect ratio shifts between the moment and captured past.

Four screengrabs from the film After Yang that include a field of memories as stars, looking at trees through a window, a plat with orange and rind and a self portrait in a multi-faceted mirror.

The ending drifts in regard and release.

I’m glad I came back to close the loop.

In some ways, that’s what it’s all about.
