If there was a technological shift that moved me firmly into the category of “old man yells at cloud,” it is modern car design.
Our rental is an entry level VW Jetta with piano black plastic surfaces that provide HVAC adjustment. They’re awful and require taking your eyes off the road with delicate taps or swipes to manipulate. I would give this setup the smallest edge over controls on a touch screen.
We are in so many bad timelines, but this branch of bad car design has many issues:
- Touch screen controls for everything
- Glossy surfaces that show fingerprints and glare
- Blinding lights
- Fake vents and exhausts
- Limited visibility
- Excessive size
- Subscription-based features
I used to start my day reading news about the auto industry. These trends coupled with deceptive design patterns across the web have broken me of the habit.
Whenever the itch strikes I’m now shifting attention to which used cars are the most reliable and repairable.
