My Grandmother’s service and the power of recollection

RECOLLECTION

December 10, 2023

After the unexpected passing of my sister in October, I was grieving listlessly. In this period I began searching for photos of her to share and became overwhelmed by the process.

One morning I woke up and decided I would focus just on today’s date and revisit 20 years of daily photos. would start my mornings with coffee and grief in need of an outlet. I started to scour photos from the day in the past, sifting through 20 years in a short span of time.

Today I uncovered a few snapshots from this service.

They are blurry—but there’s my sister with her daughter and our brother! You can see the love in every visible fiber of Robin’s being — it defies focus.

Finding and sharing moments like this with friends and family is making each morning brighter.

Each morning I review 20 years of photos from this day in the past. I find one image that hasn’t been posted and share the result on Threads. I made a video of the process. (It’s 20 minutes but the first 3 reveal the approach.)

Below is the original entry from this day. It was accompanied only by the photograph of the snow covered tree. The images below were added for the recollection:

We had an informal gathering at Spring Grove cemetery — the same place I visited with my Grandmother just the spring before.

My mother and aunt had decorated the nicely appointed room with Christmas decorations and small notes giving insight to her life. A bowl of buckeyes with ribbons, stacks of books, a slideshow on the tv, open boxes of chocolates, her quilt inspired by a trip to Hawaii, soft holiday tunes in the background, and the urn topped with a Blenko glass ball.

A lunch reception followed in an adjoining space with favorite recipes from my Grandmother.

It was all very warm.
