I just watched this YouTube video about new LED Christmas lights that finally shake the weird blue cast. It’s over 20 minutes long, but I came away understanding the nuances of bulb color theory.
I remember the evolution of lights on the family tree growing up. The earliest days were color C7s, then we moved to the T5 “mini” bulbs — first in color and then in white. I vaguely remember one year with the coveted bubble lights, but those were ultimately regulated to windowsills.
Dad was the lights guy — he had the knack for balancing distribution. Then mom would swoop in and decorate with exceptional flair.
In trying to articulate light bulb varieties I ran into the failure of the current state of internet searching — it’s so bad out there, with insuffcient data in an echo chamber. So I made the simple chart below to fill in the gaps — mind you, there are oodles more sizes, but these are the basics.
