As part of the FotoFocus biennial there have been events across (and beyond) the city, celebrating lens based art.
This evening was a demo of tintype photography at the Xavier galleries with Keith Klenowski.
It all went down surrounded by exhibits curated by Sharee Allen. Behind the Curtain was all about the moments outside the audience view for touring musicians. And What Came Before shared backstories of photographers.
Keith spoke to the group about the process of wet plate photography and we paired up in groups of two to see it happen on the spot. I’d already gotten a tintype portrait done by Keith, so I chose to be the helper in lieu of the subject this go round.
Just like autumn, seeing this process that dates back to the 1850’s happen in real time / real life is akin to magic.

Oh, and I had a photo in the Behind the Curtain show! It’s from 2009 when Bryce and Aaron Dessner debuted The Long Count with a host of friends.

Very cool.
