Notes from a visit with Meredith

Meredith rolled through town and the first thing she pulled out of her bag was this map of brutalist architecture in Buenos Aires. It’s from a group called Blue Crow Media and they make a slew of maps, both brutal and not. I’ve a friend that loves these sorts of buildings so I’m filing this link away as a potential gift.

Conversation always swirls when Meredith visits. We jumped around topics that included:

Music and Concerts. She mentioned the Hopscotch Music Festival always has an extremely good vibe, Sept 5-7 – Raleigh, NC

I’m starting a project that dives into teaching and learning. Meredith mentioned Lev Vygotsky and his belief that one learns best through interacting with others.

Through others we become ourselves

Lev Vygotsky

Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) – A marketplace for PreK-12 resources

She’s been using Book Creator with students in her classroom and they love making stories so much she extended the project to support their enthusiasm.

On the topic of books, the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy is her favorite event.

I mentioned The Book Bus here in Cincy, where Melanie Moore sells books from a vintage 1962 Volkswagen pickup truck (and a depot). All profits buy new children’s books for low income areas.

Picture books without words in Europe are called “silent books.”

Book Dash is a social impact publisher of open, African picture books for young children

At some point we talked about photography projects and she reminded me of the Click! Photography Festival, Oct 4-6 – Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill.

We have a (huge) photography event here in Cincinnati this year as the FotoFocus Biennial returns Sept 26-28, 2024, supporting exhibitions around the region.

I talked about my daily reflection project and she thought I might glean insight from a book by Wendy MacNaughton, How To Say Goodbye: The Wisdom of Hospice Caregivers. She also has a newsletter and series called DrawTogether that combines art and social-emotional learning.

Also of interest: Tony Mendoza’s Pictures with Stories, a series of photos coupled with text.

I had Risograph prints on the table and mentioned how Tom had built a portable screen printing press. She said to check out Super G Print Lab and their live printing workshops.

A recurring thread through our afternoon revolved around purpose. I mentioned adding a slash purpose page to my website, but not sure what my purpose is. I mentioned a recent focus to ensure life doesn’t narrow as I age, but widens. Maybe there’s something in that to extrapolate…

And lastly, organic mint tea makes the days better. (As do visits with friends and good conversation.)

  1. THIS POST IS AHMAAZINNG.
These maps are works of art. I would frame those maps. Then I saw that they had created maps of the great trees of London, NYC, and Paris. I’d like to know where all of the great trees are! I hope they make more maps like this.
Then all of these links are absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing all of this. Off to read and explore…
