Letter in a fish. Message in a bottle.

The Thread was a simple ask… “Does anyone else remember those Griffin and Sabine postcard/letter books?” (link)

I was transported back to a moment with mom, going through the Nick Bantock book, opening envelopes and marveling at the letters and details throughout the story.

I remembered mom stepped up her correspondence after reading it. I was in college at the time and getting mail was already reason to celebrate, but she found ways to elevate the experience.

This reminded me, mom once sent a note in a fish, I think? I ran to the basement and opened a bin of nostalgia and there it was on top — a plastic yellow thing with fading postage and mom’s impeccable penmanship. And there was the bottle! I’d forgotten about that! Rolled up inside (on paper she made by hand) was a note about graduation.

Reflection complete, I left a comment on the post — thankful for the reminder of all this — but I’m recording it here too as threads can be ephemeral.

  1. Wow. This is so amazing. Your mom’s handwriting. Beautiful. I love that you saved the bottle, the fish.
