The Contemporary Arts Center is a great architectural moment in our central district downtown.
There is one floor dedicated to staff and I was lucky to take a peek around, looking out from under one of the cantilevered slabs.
Inside and across from this view? A Mapplethorpe lingering temporarily from a recent exhibition. I saw this photo some 28 years ago in The Perfect Moment which caused a battle and obscenity charges against the CAC. Though the museum was later acquitted, it fired up the activist and artist within my high school senior self. The queer part didn’t sink in until later, but I figure the door opened just a little bit wider back then.
