Ground cover, wildflower meadows, and gravel gardens require little to no effort to thrive and are beneficial to our ecosystem. I'd love to convert our lawn. / via Kathryn

Shyness of the crown

I've seen this before but saving in hopes I remember this phenomenon. Gaps in the treetops curb the spread of insects, parasitic vines, or infectious disease and improve access to light. (Postnote: Likely saw this on Kottke years ago)
