A barometer worth reading

If we’ve ever hung out and started talking about life goals, I’ve invariably mentioned a camper van. It’d have a small desk to sit and make, and a door to a great big beautiful ever-shifting world. There would be a bed, provisions to get by for chunks of time, and hopefully a good sound system.

I’ve been waiting for VW to remake their minibus for as long as I can remember.

In fact, I’ve been wearing Birkenstocks since high school in preparation for that moment.

My friend Larry messaged me this past weekend and said his neighbor was getting ready to sell this 1981 beauty, I should head up the street and take a look. They pulled it out of the garage and popped up the bed for me. As soon as I walked down the driveway and spied it, the hairs on the back of my arms stood up.

I’m not sure this is the one, but it sure felt good and that’s a barometer worth reading.

I won’t lie, I’ve always had a more recent model in mind. I’m old. I like air conditioning and airbags.

The last year VW had these for sale in the U.S. was 2003. 2003! (Don’t get me started on the fact that Europe still has modern vans in production.)

So I’m pondering.
I’m researching.
I’m visualizing.
I’m channeling dedicated energy into this notion.

Maybe I just need to rent one and scratch the itch?
Maybe I should pimp out my station wagon? (No.)

I don’t know what will come of it all, but some thoughts feel good to nourish.
