Bonci Pizza and The Lost City

Started Christmas Eve morning over coffee and exchanging gifts with Casey’s dad and Renee. Skipped breakfast as we were all full from the previous night’s lasagna. (I’m very obsessed with making it.)

Then it was time to say goodbye to the folks and cats, bundle up and head north to Manatee County. The polar vortex was dipping it’s pinky toe into Florida which meant putting on a light jacket while we constantly refreshed cameras back home to watch snow falling, Edie prowling for treat delivery and hopes that no pipes would burst.

A while ago I was chatting with Casey’s mom about Gold Belly and mentioned they carried pizza from Bonci in Chicago—which was featured tangentially on episode 2 of Chef’s Table: Pizza on Netflix. (Which is as much a show about the human condition as it is about pizza.)

I’d be surprised for dinner with a sampler from Bonci that included Meatball, Soppressata, Zucchini, Ricotta, Lemon & Black Pepper and Potato Mozzarella. I couldn’t pick a favorite if I tried. All tasty.

🎥 Afterward I forced everyone to watch The Lost City (Paramount+) with Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. I had just seen it on the plane ride down and thought it was more than delightful. It held up for a second viewing—think Miss Congeniality mixed with Indiana Jones and an extra good supporting cast.

Four and a half stars.
